Additional images released by the government indicate a separate, more personal moment, showing Suu Kyi cutting a birthday cake inscribed with the message, Happy Birthday Aunty Suu. The inclusion of these images suggests they were taken during a celebration for her 81st birthday this past June.
The ICRC confirmed that one of its delegates visited Suu Kyi following standard procedures for detainees. The organization stated that it spoke with her in private but did not disclose specific details of the discussion. The ICRC maintains that it continues to engage with all relevant actors to ensure access to detention facilities across the country.
This meeting occurs amid increasing international pressure for humanitarian engagement with the former leader. Supporters and family members have campaigned for proof that she remains safe while held in detention. Her son, Kim Aris, expressed cautious optimism regarding the visit. He stated that while this is a first step, the objective remains direct family contact and her ultimate release alongside other political prisoners.
Since her detention in February 2021, public sightings of Suu Kyi have been non-existent. Military leaders, currently facing international isolation and sanctions, have attempted to project a return to normalcy through the announcement of upcoming elections and increased diplomatic engagement.
