Moscow Court Orders Detention of Boris Nemtsov’s Daughter in Absentia

A Moscow court has issued an order for the arrest of Zhanna Nemtsova in absentia. The daughter of the late Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov faces accusations related to the management of an undesirable organization. This legal action stems from her role as the founder of the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom, a group based in Germany that Russian authorities labeled undesirable in 2024.

Under current Russian law, these charges carry a potential sentence of up to six years in prison. The Zamoskvoretsky District Court ruling mandates two months of pre-trial detention should Nemtsova return to or be extradited to Russia. Nemtsova has resided in Europe for several years and acknowledged the court order through social media following the announcement.

Boris Nemtsov, who served as a prominent critic of the Kremlin and was once considered a successor to Boris Yeltsin, was killed near the Kremlin in 2015. While five individuals were convicted for the shooting, the family continues to express concern that the people behind the operation remain at large. The latest court order against his daughter adds another layer to the long-standing tension between the Nemtsov family and Russian authorities.
