A Spanish F-18 fighter jet operating under a NATO air policing mission shot down an unmanned aircraft that breached Romanian airspace early Sunday morning. This marks the fourth drone interception in Romania this year as tensions remain high along the 614-km border the country shares with Ukraine. The Romanian defense ministry stated that radar systems detected the drone entering from Moldova at 05:01 am. After receiving proper clearance, the pilot engaged the target and successfully downed the aircraft in an uninhabited area located between two villages.
Romania faces persistent security challenges regarding regional airspace integrity. Over the past four years, the nation has dealt with repeated drone incursions and the presence of drifting naval mines in the Black Sea that threaten critical energy and trade routes. While the ministry did not identify the specific origin of this latest drone, the event follows a trend of aerial disturbances linked to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Previous incidents include the interception of three Russian drones in July, which occurred after multiple similar breaches. Earlier this year, a separate drone crash hit an apartment building in the city of Galati and injured two residents. As the country maintains active patrol operations, these defensive actions highlight the ongoing risk that border states encounter while neighboring conflicts continue.
