Russia and Ukraine have intensified their exchange of strikes as officials from both sides report significant casualties. In Ukraine, a Russian assault on the Nikopol district in Dnipropetrovsk left two people dead and three injured. Regional military administration head Oleksandr Hanzha reported that four districts faced over 20 attacks from drones, artillery, and aerial bombs throughout the day.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian strikes reached deep into Russian territory. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that these operations targeted logistics centers in Sarapul, Kazan, and Volgograd. Ukrainian drones also struck a maritime terminal in the Krasnodar region and an oil refinery in Volgograd. In the Volgograd and Rostov regions of Russia, officials reported one death and nine injuries resulting from these drone attacks. Zelenskyy described these actions as part of a long-range plan to weaken the Russian military machine by limiting its access to energy and supply resources.
The conflict continues to disrupt critical infrastructure and global supply chains. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed strikes against a vessel carrying military cargo near the port of Odesa and reported territorial gains in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions. Meanwhile, the Russian Union of Grain Exporters and Producers warned that continued attacks on Black Sea shipping could result in a total blockade of grain export corridors. Such a closure threatens to raise global prices and impact food security in developing nations.
Domestic political pressure in Ukraine is also mounting. Thousands of protesters filled the streets of Kyiv on Friday to demand the reinstatement of former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov was removed in mid-July after only six months in the position. His dismissal remains unexplained, leading to public speculation regarding military leadership and internal government stability. Protesters have vowed to continue their demonstrations until the government provides clarity or restores Fedorov to his post. Yevhenii Khmara has been named acting defence minister in the interim.
