Harley Finkelstein, the president of Shopify, believes we are currently entering a golden age for small business owners. He points to the rapid adoption of AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini as the primary catalyst for this shift. Recent data shows that traffic and orders from these AI platforms to Shopify stores have tripled over the past year, proving that new technology is lowering the barrier to entry for entrepreneurs across the globe.

Notably, this trend benefits small players rather than just established corporations. In the last quarter alone, 75 percent of AI-driven purchases on the platform originated from product categories outside the top 100 brands. This suggests that AI is effectively leveling the playing field, allowing niche sellers to reach customers they previously could not access through traditional marketing methods.

Finkelstein also highlighted the impact of Sidekick, an AI assistant built into the Shopify ecosystem. The tool handled 34 million user conversations in the most recent quarter. According to internal metrics, merchants who interact with the assistant early in their business lifecycle reach their first five sales much faster than those who do not. This speed is often the deciding factor for a new venture.

While the market reacted with optimism to these developments, causing Shopify shares to jump 17 percent after the latest earnings report, the company continues to focus on long-term growth. As AI integrates further into daily operations, the tools available to independent sellers are becoming more sophisticated and accessible than at any previous point in time. This marks a fundamental change in how individuals launch and manage their businesses.
