Ohio State Fair butter cow theme unveiled, honoring America 250

The 2026 Ohio State Fair has officially unveiled its annual butter sculpture exhibit. This year, the display honors America's 250th anniversary, featuring a butter cow and calf alongside a bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, and an engraved 250 seal.

Lead sculptor Paul Brooke and his team of five artists spent nearly 400 hours planning and executing the display. They used approximately 2,100 pounds of butter to complete the sculptures in just six days. One of the more technical challenges involved constructing heavy butter flags, each weighing 200 pounds and welded to the floor of the cooler.

Governor Mike DeWine attended the reveal at the newly renovated Dairy Products Building. He noted the secrecy surrounding the theme, comparing the anticipation to the Academy Awards. The renovation of the building, part of the Expo 2050 Master Plan, provides additional space for both the sculptures and the dairy service area where visitors purchase milkshakes and ice cream.

This tradition traces its history back to a 1903 contest. Over the decades, the display has grown into a major attraction that draws roughly 500,000 visitors annually. After the fair concludes, the butter is recycled and refined for non-edible products. The exhibition remains a fixture of the state fair, serving as a point of pride for Ohioans and a way to share the state's history with guests.
