A large-scale public art installation in downtown Portland has hit a snag. One of thirty six-foot crow statues, part of the Wildwood: Follow the Crows treasure hunt, was damaged this week. The statue, known as Paul Birdyan and located in Pride Plaza, was found covered in black paint with its hat removed.
The installation is a collaborative effort meant to promote the upcoming film Wildwood. Dozens of artists hand-painted these sculptures to create a distinct, city-wide art trail. Organizers from Downtown Portland Clean and Safe stated that the injured crow is now undergoing repair.
While the sight of a vandalized sculpture caught the attention of residents on social media, local police confirmed that no official vandalism report exists for the incident. The statues are intended to stay on display until after Halloween, at which point they will be auctioned off. Proceeds from the auction are set to benefit OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
Artists involved in the project expressed a pragmatic view of the situation. Michael Buchayano, who created the damaged piece, noted that art can act as a collaboration between the creator and the public. The trail remains open for residents to explore as the city continues the promotion of the film.
