Watch the total solar eclipse with ESA in León

On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will cross Europe, and the European Space Agency is hosting a public viewing event in León, Spain. The phenomenon represents a rare opportunity to witness the Moon completely blocking the Sun, with Northern Spain serving as one of the prime viewing locations globally.

ESA is partnering with the City of León and the University of León to hold this event at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos de León. The program runs throughout the day, starting with family-oriented workshops, scientific demonstrations, and educational activities focused on solar physics and space exploration. Attendees can learn how to observe the eclipse safely, with certified eclipse glasses provided to the public while supplies last.

Starting at 17:30 CEST, the outdoor grounds of the venue will open for the evening observation program. Scientists and engineers will guide the public through the different stages of the eclipse, providing expert commentary on the mechanics of the event as it happens. The entire day is free of charge and does not require advance registration.

For those who cannot travel to León, ESA will broadcast the eclipse live from the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre in Teruel. This broadcast will be accessible through ESA Web TV and the agency’s official video channels. Whether in person or online, the event offers a chance to engage directly with the experts who monitor the Sun and study the solar system.
