Chris Brown pleads guilty to affray over London nightclub attack
US musician Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to affray regarding a 2023 incident at a London nightclub. Prosecutors stated that Brown and his vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, carried out an unprovoked attack on music producer Abe Diaw at the Tape venue in Mayfair. CCTV footage presented to the court captured Brown striking the victim over the head with a glass bottle. The assault continued as the victim attempted to leave the area, during which he was pushed to the ground and kicked by the defendants. Diaw required hospital treatment for head and knee injuries following the altercation.
The case originally involved more serious allegations including assault and attempted grievous bodily harm. These charges were dismissed following the guilty pleas entered at Southwark Crown Court. Affray involves the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes a person to fear for their safety. The offense carries a potential prison sentence of up to three years under UK law. Both men entered their pleas during a brief hearing and are currently awaiting their sentencing date.
Judge Tony Baumgartner scheduled the sentencing for 26 October. Brown received bail conditions that permit him to travel outside the United Kingdom, provided he returns by 25 October. Previous bail terms in this matter included a five million pound security fee and requirements for Brown to surrender his passport while on tour. Metropolitan Police officials described the act as disgraceful and noted the importance of pursuing such cases to ensure accountability within the city.
