Evan Rachel Wood Was ‘Sad’ Not to Be Asked Back for ‘Practical Magic 2’
Evan Rachel Wood has confirmed she will not appear in the upcoming Practical Magic sequel. The actress, who played Kylie Owens in the 1998 original, stated that she was never asked to return for the new production.
Wood expressed her disappointment regarding the decision during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. She noted that the cast formed a strong bond during the filming of the first movie as children. She stated that the chance to revisit those roles as adults would have provided a unique sense of history that is difficult to recreate.
Despite her interest in returning, Wood explained that the creative team chose to recast her role. Joey King is set to play the character of Kylie Owens in the new film. Wood confirmed on social media that she even offered to appear in a smaller capacity, such as a single scene, but the production moved in a different direction.
The sequel is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, The Book of Magic. Wood mentioned that she read the source material and feels the film may not strictly follow the book’s narrative path. While Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, and other members of the original cast are returning, Wood will not be part of the project.
The new film, directed by Susanne Bier, is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 11.
