Legendary musician Phil Collins recently opened up about a harrowing personal ordeal from 2024. The rock icon and former Genesis front man revealed that he nearly lost his life following years of alcohol abuse. Collins spent seven months in a Swiss hospital, including a critical period in the intensive care unit where he was unconscious and faced organ failure.
His long-time manager contacted the Collins family during this time, fearing the worst. The situation became so grave that family members were summoned to his bedside to say goodbye. Collins shared that he has no memory of these visits, as he was in a state of crisis while his organs were seizing up. He emphasized how fortunate he is to have survived the ordeal and confirmed that he has remained sober since that time.
Following his recovery, the musician has spent time reconnecting with his family, including a notable gathering in London at the end of 2025. Collins continues to manage physical health challenges, specifically regarding his mobility. He has undergone five knee operations and currently uses crutches to assist with walking.
Reflecting on his career and current status, the 75-year-old indicated that he is content with his current lifestyle. He noted that he prefers to step back from performing rather than compromise his standards as a drummer. His focus remains on his health and time spent with his family after the near-death experience he describes as a stark turning point in his life.
