Ritchie Blackmore is set to perform with Deep Purple for the first time in 33 years. The 81-year-old guitarist confirmed that he will join his former bandmates for a single song during tonight’s concert at the Northwell at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York.
Blackmore shared the news during a recent livestream with his wife, Candice Night. He stated that the idea originated from a conversation with singer Ian Gillan, who approved the guest appearance. Blackmore noted that the arrangement is strictly for an encore performance and serves as a nod to the band’s history.
Preparations for the appearance include a change of strings on his Fender Stratocaster, a maintenance task he said he has not performed in over 25 years. He also received a medical injection to manage back pain, allowing him to stand during the show. Blackmore expressed a grounded outlook on the reunion, describing it as a chance to see the old guys again.
This appearance marks a break from his current focus on acoustic performances with Blackmore’s Night. While he remains active in music, he has not played rock in a public setting for many years. He acknowledged current Deep Purple guitarist Simon McBride, labeling him a capable player who handles the band’s material well.
The event remains a one-time occurrence rather than the start of a longer tour or permanent return. Blackmore continues to prioritize his health following recent tour cancellations due to vertigo and other physical concerns. Tonight’s show at Jones Beach represents a rare crossover of his past career with his current musical life.
