A 4-hour Elon Musk documentary and a dark CIA comedy lead Venice Film Festival lineup
The Venice Film Festival has officially unveiled the lineup for its 83rd edition, signaling the start of the fall film season. This year features a diverse slate, anchored by a four-hour documentary centered on Elon Musk and the dark CIA comedy Wild Horse Nine, which stars Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich as agents operating in Chile during the 1973 coup.
Festival director Alberto Barbera noted that the selection contains fewer major Hollywood studio productions than previous years, focusing instead on a broad range of international and independent projects. Highlights in the main competition include the thriller Bunker starring Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, and a coming-of-age story directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
Notable screenings outside of the competition include a seven-hour retrospective of Bernardo Bertolucci and a new project from Russell Crowe. The event opens on September 2 with the premiere of Ink, a dramatization of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch’s career directed by Danny Boyle. Maggie Gyllenhaal serves as this year’s jury president.
The Venice Film Festival remains a primary indicator for potential awards-season contenders, and organizers are preparing for a competitive field.
