‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Writer-Director Reveals Sequel Has Been Written, Hasn’t Been Made For “Financial Reasons”

Fans of the 2023 Dungeons and Dragons film are still waiting for a follow-up, but the path forward remains blocked by studio finances. While the first movie received high praise from critics and audiences, the project struggled to generate enough revenue to justify a direct sequel.

Writer-director Jonathan Goldstein recently confirmed at Comic-Con that a script for the second film is finished. Despite having a complete narrative ready, the team has not received a greenlight from the studio to begin production. The film carries a high price tag, and current conditions make it difficult for the studio to move forward.

Honor Among Thieves earned $205 million on a $150 million budget, a performance that created a financial hurdle for the production company. The directors remain hopeful about the cast and the story they created, noting that fans would likely enjoy the extension of the world.

While the film franchise is currently on hold, other adaptations continue. Netflix is moving forward with a new live-action series titled The Forgotten Realms, helmed by Shawn Levy and writer Drew Crevello. This shift highlights a new approach to the property following the cancellation of a previous Paramount+ project.
