Marvel Studios has officially set the stage for its next era of films with a major announcement at D23 this past weekend. For the first time since the 2019 acquisition of the X-Men characters by Disney, the studio has confirmed plans for a new feature. This project is currently scheduled for a 2028 release and promises to be a significant moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Among the key casting details revealed, University of Michigan alumna Maya Boyd has been tapped to play the iconic role of Storm. She joins a cast that includes Kit Connor as Scott Summers, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, and Adam Driver as the antagonist Mister Sinister. Jake Schreier, who previously directed 2025's Thunderbolts, will lead the production as director.

Boyd is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s musical theater program. Her professional background includes a Broadway debut in 2023 for the production of Merrily We Roll Along. She also starred as the title character in & Juliet and appeared alongside Taraji P. Henson in the stage production of Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Her transition into this high-profile superhero role marks a notable milestone in her career.

Marvel Studios is looking to maintain its recent momentum in the box office following the commercial success of projects like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which earned over $2 billion globally in less than a month. With Avengers: Doomsday slated for December 18 and further entries like Avengers: Secret Wars and a third Black Panther film already on the horizon, the upcoming X-Men movie stands as a anchor for the studio's broader schedule over the next two years.
