Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially secured the title of the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. The movie reached a total of $1.352 billion at the global box office, surpassing the previous record held by Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $1.338 billion.

Since its release on July 17, the three-hour epic has performed consistently well across international and domestic markets. It generated $516 million in the United States and $835 million internationally. A significant portion of this success is attributed to its IMAX screenings, which contributed $354 million to the total revenue. This milestone marks the fifth release of the year to cross the $1 billion threshold and establishes the film as the third R-rated production ever to achieve this financial benchmark.

Ryan Reynolds, the star behind the Deadpool franchise, acknowledged the achievement publicly on social media. He offered his congratulations to the cast and crew, marking the transition of the record-holding title between the two massive blockbusters. The Odyssey now stands as the most successful film in Nolan’s career, easily overtaking his previous high-water mark set by The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

The film features Matt Damon as the king of Ithaca, documenting his difficult journey home following the conclusion of the Trojan War. He is joined by a large ensemble cast, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson. Beyond its R-rated box office record, The Odyssey has also become the highest-grossing release in the history of IMAX, performing better than Avatar’s initial run in that specific format.
