Canal+ Pledges More Than $1 Billion For French & European Cinema Over Five Years

Canal+ recently announced a major financial commitment to French and European cinema. The Paris-based pay-TV giant pledged over $1 billion to support the film industry over the next five years. This deal, starting in 2028, covers Canal+ and CINÉ+ OCS platforms. It succeeds a shorter agreement that ends in 2027 and represents a significant increase in funding for the sector.

This agreement involves several French film guilds and creative bodies. The funding covers a wide range of projects including debut films, animation, and medium-budget mainstream works. Canal+ stated that these medium-budget films are critical for the economic stability of the French market. The company aims to provide specific support for creative art forms while ensuring a diverse range of voices reaches the screen.

This news arrives during a period of scrutiny regarding the ownership structure of the company. Recent protests from artists and industry professionals at the Cannes Film Festival highlighted concerns about potential political influence within the organization. In response, leadership at the company maintains that their focus remains on production quality and artistic output.

Under this new arrangement, Canal+ will retain its position within the French media chronology system. This status allows the platform to air movies six months after their initial theatrical release. CEO Maxime Saada confirmed that this access remains a priority for the business and its subscribers in the years ahead.
