ESPN starts layoffs tied to NFL Network acquisition, memo says
ESPN is currently undertaking a round of layoffs as it integrates assets from the NFL Network. This represents the first major staff reduction at the sports media company in three years. Chairman Jimmy Pitaro confirmed the decision in a memo to staff, stating that these changes follow the acquisition of several league digital assets, including the NFL Fantasy platform and the rights to distribute the RedZone channel.
The reorganization efforts began after the deal received regulatory approval in January, with NFL Network staff officially moving under the ESPN banner in April. Pitaro noted that the company spent months evaluating organizational structures to position itself for the future. The layoffs primarily affect production and behind-the-scenes roles, though some on-air talent positions are impacted as well. Among the notable departures is longtime baseball analyst Karl Ravech, who had been with the network since 1993.
ESPN analyst Ryan Clark was also impacted by the decision. Clark received the news while working on air, though reports indicate that executives made an effort to deliver the news directly. Clark addressed the situation on social media, expressing support for his colleagues who were affected by the cuts. The layoffs at ESPN align with broader cost-reduction efforts occurring across the Walt Disney Company this week.
While the company has secured long-term extensions for prominent insiders like Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, the overall scope of these workforce changes reflects a significant shift in the operational structure of ESPN following the absorption of these NFL-related assets. Leadership has stated a commitment to providing support and professional resources to those transitioning out of the company.
