Ryan Murphy has officially debuted his adaptation of The Shards on FX. The series translates Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 novel into a multi-season television project set in 1981 Los Angeles. Murphy secured the rights after an initial development deal at HBO ended and he moved quickly to secure the material. He describes the process as a personal mission because the era mirrors his own formative years during the early eighties.
The production involved a massive casting effort. Murphy notes that the team saw approximately 500 actors to fill the roles of the affluent teenagers featured in the story. Igby Rigney stars as the protagonist Bret, joined by Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere. Murphy maintains that while the series captures the aesthetic of the era, the primary focus remains on the emotional narrative rather than just the horror elements.
Murphy worked closely with the author during the initial stages of production. While Ellis took a hands-off approach after the first two episodes, he remained available for guidance. The creative team structured the show to cover one school year per season with a plan for three or four years in total. This adaptation serves as a departure for the director who rarely focuses his work on his own childhood experiences.
The show explores themes of trauma and identity through the lens of a serial killer mystery. Murphy stated that he wanted to approach the intimacy in the series with restraint despite the graphic nature of the source material. He highlights that the show acts as a meditation on the fear and uncertainty of the early eighties, drawing comparisons to erotic thrillers of that time. The first two episodes are now available to watch on FX and Hulu with a staggered release schedule continuing through September.
