A private horse farm in Reisterstown is changing the way it trains steeplechase racehorses. Instead of relying solely on traditional turf gallops, trainers now incorporate swimming sessions in a farm pond to keep their animals in peak physical condition.
Trainer Cyrill Murphy explains that this routine offers significant health benefits, especially during periods of drought when the ground hardens. By moving training into the water, the horses gain cardiovascular exercise and build muscle strength without the impact or stress on their bones and joints.
Five horses currently participate in the swimming program two to three times per week. Murphy notes that while swimming cannot replace high-intensity training, it is a highly effective way to maintain fitness levels for horses that have already reached a competitive stage.
The approach appears to be paying off in the winner's circle. Recent winners McTigue and Gold Charm both utilize this pond routine as part of their preparation. Murphy views the pond work as a distinct advantage, allowing his horses to stay cool and physically sound during the heat of the summer racing season.
