Data from the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency has revealed that GLP-1 weight-loss drugs are now linked to over 150 reported deaths. The information comes from the agency’s Yellow Card Biobank, a system that tracks adverse drug reactions. While these figures represent a small fraction of the millions of people who have used these medications, they highlight potential safety risks that patients and medical professionals must monitor.
The reported fatalities include various medications such as semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide. Specifically, the data lists 98 deaths associated with tirzepatide, 37 with semaglutide, and 18 with liraglutide. In addition to these deaths, the registry contains reports of thousands of patients experiencing gastrointestinal issues, nervous system disorders, and psychiatric conditions after starting these treatments.
It is important to note that these reports do not prove a direct causal link between the drugs and the deaths. Medical experts and regulators emphasize that these incidents could stem from other factors. The numbers must also be viewed in the context of high usage rates, as millions of individuals across the UK currently use or have used these products for weight management.
Representatives from pharmaceutical companies Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have stated that they monitor safety data closely and prioritize patient health. They maintain that medications for chronic conditions come with known risks and should only be used under the direct supervision of a healthcare provider. Patients who experience adverse reactions are encouraged to report them to the appropriate health authorities to ensure ongoing drug safety surveillance.
