A study published in The BMJ provides new data on the cardiovascular impact of tirzepatide. Researchers analyzed clinical records from nearly 53,000 patients who live with both type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The data shows that patients taking tirzepatide experienced a lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events compared to those taking sitagliptin.

The findings highlight a 33% lower risk of heart attack for those on the tirzepatide treatment. After one year of observation, the group using tirzepatide maintained a 2.9% rate of major cardiovascular events, while the comparison group reached 4.4%. This indicates that for every 70 people treated with tirzepatide, one major cardiovascular event may be prevented.

Lead author Dr. Nils Krüger notes that while these medications started as glucose control treatments, their impact reaches across metabolic health. The study suggests that benefits appear early in the treatment cycle, potentially before significant weight loss occurs. This points to possible vascular or anti-inflammatory effects of the drug.
