Mental health evaluation ordered for son of Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy in mother’s shooting
Elijah Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is undergoing a court-ordered mental health evaluation. This development follows his arrest earlier this week in connection with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at their Virginia residence. Elijah Bieniemy faces charges that include malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling.
Legal representatives for Elijah Bieniemy informed the court that he has a history of serious mental health issues. During the proceedings, his attorneys argued that his mental state at the time of the incident is central to his defense. They also stated he is indigent and currently unable to pay for an independent expert, leading the judge to grant the request for an official competency evaluation.
Elijah Bieniemy remains in custody at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Court records indicate that upcoming appearances have been delayed, with the next status hearing now scheduled for September 9. The investigation into the shooting remains active, and authorities have not released information regarding a motive.
Mia Bieniemy, 57, received medical treatment for multiple gunshot wounds and has since been released from the intensive care unit. Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed that she is improving. Eric Bieniemy remains away from the team as he attends to his family. The organization has stated that offensive duties are being managed by other staff members, including Joe Bleymaier and Andy Heck, while Reid oversees the system.
