This Common Gym Supplement May Give Cancer-Fighting Cells An Energy Boost
A popular gym supplement might have a surprising new role in medical science. Research from the University of California, Los Angeles, indicates that creatine could assist the immune system in fighting cancer. While widely known for its ability to increase energy supplies in muscle tissue, new data shows it also supports dendritic cells. These cells are responsible for guiding and activating T cells, which are the immune system's primary line of defense against tumors.
Immunologist Lili Yang notes that creatine acts as an energy source for the entire network that supports cancer-fighting cells. When the research team analyzed tumor activity in mice, they observed that the creatine transporter, the mechanism that allows cells to absorb the nutrient, was highly active in dendritic cells found near tumors. By contrast, lab-grown dendritic cells that lacked this transporter struggled to activate T cells effectively. In further experiments, increasing creatine levels in mice with melanoma resulted in slower tumor growth and higher activity levels of these crucial immune cells.
These results provide a potential path for improving existing immunotherapy treatments, which currently show varying levels of success across different patients. If future studies hold up, this low-cost supplement could become a standard way to support patients during cancer therapy. Scientists are now preparing to move into clinical trials to test these observations in humans.
It is important to state that this research is in early stages. The findings are based on animal models and laboratory cell cultures rather than human clinical outcomes.
