A film production in the Amazon led to a significant scientific finding. While filming with actor Will Smith, researchers from the University of Queensland and members of the Waorani Indigenous group discovered a massive green anaconda measuring 7.5 meters. The encounter occurred during a project focused on the ecological effects of oil drilling in the region.
Professor Bryan Fry and his team utilized this opportunity to conduct genetic analysis on the reptiles. Their findings reveal that what was once considered a single species of green anaconda is actually two distinct species. While they appear nearly identical, DNA evidence confirms the separation between the populations in Ecuador and Brazil.
The research also highlights the biological impact of industrial pollution. By comparing tissue samples, the scientists found that male snakes contain ten times more lead and cadmium than females. These toxins enter the ecosystem through oil extraction activities and move up the food chain, ultimately threatening the health and fertility of these apex predators.
This discovery underlines the vulnerability of the Amazonian ecosystem. With the newly identified Brazilian green anaconda occupying a smaller range, its future remains uncertain. The data serves as a clear indicator of how industrial activity creates long-term damage in remote habitats.
