France and Spain are facing a record-breaking wildfire season this summer. Thousands of residents have fled their homes as heat waves and persistent drought transform rural landscapes into tinderboxes. A new analysis from World Weather Attribution confirms that human-induced climate change is the primary driver, making extreme fire conditions at least twice as likely in France and 20 times more likely in central Spain.

Data shows that 430,000 hectares have burned across both countries so far this year. This total is significantly higher than the same period last year. In Spain alone, the fire footprint is now roughly the size of London. The situation follows a notably wet winter that encouraged rapid vegetation growth, which then became highly flammable fuel during the subsequent months of heat and water scarcity.

Experts note that these fires are not isolated accidents. A pattern of weather whiplash is emerging where intense rainfall occurs less frequently while the atmosphere pulls moisture from the soil more effectively during the long, hot dry spells that follow. Beyond the direct damage to towns and rural property, the heat waves have forced shutdowns of essential infrastructure, including nuclear power plants and rail lines.

While some fires have been partially contained, the risk remains high as more heat waves are expected through mid-August. Beyond climate factors, land management practices like the abandonment of farmland and the creation of dense timber plantations have created environments that are highly susceptible to burning. Scientists emphasize that as long as fossil fuel emissions continue, these conditions will persist and intensify.
