Vanderbilt Health has appointed Alexander Bick, MD, PhD, as the new Scientific Director of VANTAGE. This leadership change becomes official on September 1. Dr. Bick replaces Simon Mallal, MBBS, who has held the position since 2015.
VANTAGE serves as a central hub for genomics research at the medical center. The facility provides essential infrastructure including sample biobanking, genome sequencing, and spatial multiomic profiling. These services act as the backbone for various institutional initiatives focused on personalized medicine and advanced therapeutic discovery.
Dr. Bick brings a strong background in the genetics of blood disorders to the role. He currently serves as the Director of the Division of Genetic Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology and as Principal Investigator of BioVU, a massive repository of genetic material linked to electronic health records. His work at VANTAGE will focus on integrating biospecimen management with genomic technologies to support ongoing clinical research.
The outgoing director, Simon Mallal, oversaw significant expansion of the facility. During his tenure, the resource supported the Alliance for Genomic Discovery, a large-scale project that has sequenced more than 300,000 whole genomes in partnership with various pharmaceutical organizations. Jennifer Pietenpol, Chief Scientific and Strategy Officer at Vanderbilt Health, noted that this leadership transition will ensure the facility remains prepared for the convergence of data science and precision medicine.
Current research supported by the facility covers a broad spectrum of medical inquiry. Teams are utilizing these resources to study the mechanisms behind cancer immunotherapy side effects, develop new antibody treatments, and explore genetic factors related to environmental exposures. The appointment marks the next stage for the organization as it looks to increase its capacity for turning patient samples into clinical insights.
