The American Society of Human Genetics has announced the recipients of its 2026 Professional Awards. This recognition celebrates seven individuals for their contributions to research, education, mentorship, and public service within the field of genetics and genomics.
Dr. Yusuke Nakamura, President of the National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition in Japan, receives the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in immunogenomics and his role in building global precision medicine infrastructure. The Leadership Award goes to Dr. Aravinda Chakravarti of New York University Grossman School of Medicine for his foundational contributions to population and statistical genetics.
Dr. Wendy Chung from Boston Children’s Hospital is recognized with the Scientific Achievement Award for her work in clinical genomics and gene discovery. Dr. Rebecca Ahrens-Nicklas of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia receives the Early Career Award for her progress in personalized in vivo CRISPR therapy for metabolic diseases.
Journalist Roxanne Khamsi is honored with the Advocacy Award for her reporting on the intersection of genetics and medicine in The Atlantic. Dr. Robbee Wedow of Purdue University earns the Education Award for his work with the Humane Genetics Curriculum. Finally, Dr. Nancy B. Spinner is awarded for her long-standing mentorship of laboratory directors and scientists throughout her career.
These recipients will be honored during the 2026 Annual Meeting in Montréal, scheduled for October 20-24. The event serves as a platform for professionals to discuss the progress of human genetics and its application to global health.
