A recent study from Auburn University indicates that current industry standards for broiler breeder fertility may be misguided. Researchers discovered that flock dynamics play a much larger role in reproductive success than the performance of individual roosters. While traditional metrics like sperm penetration rates often favor single-male housing, this research shows that groups of four roosters with 40 hens actually produce higher fertility rates than one-rooster, 10-hen configurations.

The findings challenge the reliance on traditional sperm quality measurements, which failed to predict actual fertility outcomes in the study. Furthermore, the team observed no significant differences in testosterone levels among roosters, regardless of their group size or exposure to hens. This contradicts the common assumption that higher testosterone levels always correlate with better fertility and physical development in breeding males.

Interestingly, the research highlighted an inverse relationship between fertility and egg production. Smaller group sizes led to higher egg yields, with hens laying 25 more eggs each compared to those in larger groups. However, these larger, higher-fertility groups suggest that producers must carefully balance reproductive performance with overall output goals.

The data also identified a common decline in testosterone levels among all males between 30 and 40 weeks of age. This window corresponds to the periods of reduced fertility frequently observed in commercial operations. Principal investigator Charlene Hanlon noted that these results explain why finding the root causes of fertility issues has remained difficult for the industry. Future work will concentrate on testes development and regression to provide more accurate management strategies for commercial flocks.
