A study conducted at the University of Liege indicates a connection between frequent micro-awakenings during sleep and an increased genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers monitored over 500 healthy participants to track these brief interruptions in sleep cycles, which occur without full consciousness.

Data collected from middle-aged adults, specifically those around the average age of 59, showed that higher frequencies of these awakenings correlate with genetic markers associated with the development of Alzheimer’s. This specific pattern was not identified in younger research subjects.

The research focuses on the coeruleus locus, a small brainstem region responsible for sleep regulation, attention, and wakefulness. This area is known as an early site for the accumulation of abnormal proteins associated with Alzheimer’s, potentially beginning as early as a person’s teenage years.

While these findings suggest that sleep monitoring could provide an accessible method for identifying vulnerability to the disease, researchers caution that they have not confirmed a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Further investigation is required to fully understand the link between sleep disturbances and the early stages of cognitive decline.
