Amazon Leo files plan to deploy 5,105 D2D satellites

Amazon Leo has filed a new proposal with the Federal Communications Commission to deploy a massive constellation of 5,105 low-Earth orbit satellites. This initiative aims to provide direct-to-device connectivity to users across the globe. These satellites are designed to work alongside assets Amazon is currently acquiring from Globalstar to extend their network reach.

The system utilizes a specific mix of mobile-satellite service spectrum and other frequency bands to support connectivity. The design includes five distinct orbital shells to ensure coverage for both densely populated areas and more remote polar regions. Amazon intends to use these satellites to support everyday smartphone functions including emergency messaging and basic data transmission.

Integration remains a central focus for this project. Amazon plans to use optical inter-satellite links to ensure the new constellation functions in concert with their existing satellite systems. The company also confirmed that these satellites will maintain operational compatibility with Apple devices, building upon existing capabilities already established in the market.

Safety and sustainability measures are part of the hardware deployment plan. The satellites possess a planned lifespan of six to eight years, after which they will be actively deorbited. Amazon has also incorporated specific design requirements for their propellant tanks to minimize potential orbital debris in the event of a collision or mechanical failure.

The project arrives as competition in the direct-to-device space increases. While Amazon targets a potential 2028 deployment date, other firms like SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile are already moving forward with their own networks. Amazon continues to manage regulatory hurdles as they work toward completing their $11.5 billion deal with Globalstar.
