It Took a Century, but Astronomers Imaged Betelgeuse's Companion
For over a century, astronomers have searched for evidence of a companion star orbiting the red supergiant Betelgeuse. This bright star, located in the constellation Orion, is one of the most studied objects in the night sky. Despite its prominence, the immense light and regular pulsations of Betelgeuse made identifying a smaller companion a significant challenge for researchers. Recent data from the Very Large Telescope in Chile has provided the clearest images yet of this elusive neighbor.
The companion star, named Betelgeuse B and nicknamed Siwarha, was captured using the SPHERE instrument. Initial predictions suggested a mass similar to our Sun, but new observations indicate that Siwarha is two to three times as massive. Astronomer Miguel Montargès noted that this discovery marks the end of a decades-long pursuit. While the star is clearly visible in the latest imagery, the research team plans to continue tracking its orbit to confirm the gravitational relationship between the two objects.
Understanding the presence of this companion helps clarify long-standing questions regarding Betelgeuse. In recent years, researchers observed unexpected dimming phases which were once linked to the potential of an impending supernova. Better imaging reveals that dust clouds and mass-loss ejections from the supergiant are primary factors in these fluctuations. The existence of a companion provides a new variable for scientists to consider as they model the future evolution of the system.
The impact of Siwarha on the eventual death of the red supergiant remains a subject of active inquiry. When Betelgeuse reaches the end of its life, it will undergo a massive collapse, likely resulting in a supernova visible from Earth. Astronomers are now assessing whether this companion will survive the explosion or if its presence will alter the final stages of the primary star. Further observation over the next year will confirm the orbital path of Siwarha and solidify its role in the Betelgeuse system.
