Curiosity Photographs a ‘Sea of Polygons’ on Mars
The Curiosity rover has captured a remarkable geological find within the Valle Grande region of Mars. During its 4,930th and 4,931st days on the surface, the rover documented a vast field of polygonal fractures stretching as far as its cameras can see. These honeycomb-like patterns, which surround a 20-foot-tall butte named Miraflores, represent a scale of surface texture never seen before by mission scientists.
Ashwin Vasavada, the project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, described the landscape as a sea of polygons. While researchers have identified similar structures on Mars previously, the sheer density and extent of this particular field have surprised the team. Scientists are now analyzing the geometry and chemical composition of the site to understand how these formations originated.
NASA points to several potential causes for these honeycomb textures. One common theory involves cyclic temperature shifts that influence how water moves out of buried sediment over time. This discovery adds another piece to the complex geologic history of the planet.
Since its landing on August 5, 2012, Curiosity has provided evidence that Mars once possessed the water and chemical building blocks necessary for microbial life. As the rover continues its long ascent up Mount Sharp, this latest imagery serves as a reminder of the unexpected terrain it continues to encounter. The data gathered here helps researchers piece together the environmental conditions of ancient Mars.
