SpaceX wins $1.6 billion in launch orders for military satellite networks

The U.S. Space Force has selected SpaceX for a $1.6 billion contract to support military satellite networks. This award marks the largest order under the National Security Space Launch Phase 3 program to date. SpaceX is slated to perform 18 Falcon 9 launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base through the end of 2027.

These missions directly support the Space Based Sensing and Targeting portfolio. This collection of programs aims to improve how the military detects, tracks, and shares information regarding threats. The satellites involved focus on missile tracking, data networking, and airborne target monitoring. SpaceX is currently responsible for building several key segments of these satellite systems, giving the company a central role in both architecture and deployment.

This agreement falls under the Lane 1 procurement program, which streamlines the acquisition process for national security missions. The Space Force completed the procurement in just two months. Officials note that the rapid pace of this contract reflects a growing demand for military launches, which recently pushed the service to raise the total contract ceiling for this program to $17 billion.

Executing 18 launches by 2027 requires a high operational cadence. Currently, SpaceX is the only provider with the infrastructure and launch frequency required to maintain this schedule from the West Coast. The success of this award suggests that the military will continue to rely on proven commercial launch providers to meet its objectives in low Earth orbit.
