NASA Swift rescue mission spins into trouble during commissioning
Katalyst Space is working to stabilize its LINK spacecraft following significant issues during its initial commissioning phase. The spacecraft, designed to rescue NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, is currently spinning after two of its three reaction wheels became inoperable. This hardware failure, coupled with problems in the cold-gas thruster system, has forced ground controllers to move toward emergency measures to regain control.
Despite the loss of attitude stability, the spacecraft remains in contact with operators on the ground. Mission teams are now using the vehicle's electric propulsion thrusters to halt the spin. While the mission has faced setbacks since launching earlier this month on a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket, developers report that the thruster burns are yielding positive results.
The timeline for this operation remains tight. Swift is scheduled to deorbit later this year, giving the Katalyst team a limited window to complete the rendezvous and capture maneuvers. Mission operations identified communication and control anomalies earlier in July, but the latest mechanical issues represent a more immediate threat to the rescue mission's success. The team continues to adjust flight software to accommodate the new configuration of the hardware, asserting that the mission is still active and capable of reaching its target.
Katalyst Space has not provided specific details regarding why the reaction wheels failed. However, they maintain that the current course of action provides a viable path to the observatory. As the spacecraft works to orient itself in space, all other major subsystems are performing as expected. The outcome of these stabilization efforts will dictate whether the mission can proceed with its plan to extend the life of the NASA observatory.
