K2 Space raises $500 million for commercial, defense satellite expansion

K2 Space has secured $500 million in a new funding round, bringing its valuation to $6.8 billion. This capital injection follows a rapid series of investments that saw the company reach a $3 billion valuation just seven months ago. The Torrance-based manufacturer now focuses on transitioning from orbital demonstrations to large-scale production for military and commercial clients.

With over $1 billion in total capital raised, the company intends to increase manufacturing capacity at its 180,000-square-foot factory. The goal is to produce up to 100 large satellites per year. CEO Karan Kunjur stated that the company holds more than $1 billion in signed contracts, highlighting the growing demand for their Mega-class and upcoming Giga-class platforms.

Unlike many competitors who prioritize miniaturization, K2 Space designs larger satellites capable of carrying heavy payloads and generating significant power. This strategy anticipates the falling costs of launch services and the availability of heavier-lift rockets. These platforms are intended to host various technologies, including space-based data centers, communications equipment, and defense sensors.

The firm has already demonstrated its systems in orbit, including a 2-metric-ton satellite launched in March. Current defense-related projects include providing satellite buses for the U.S. Space Force and supporting interceptor systems for the Golden Dome missile-defense initiative. As K2 moves toward its Trinity mission in 2027, the company aims to prove it can maintain production schedules and cost controls for multiyear programs.
