Blue Origin has officially identified the cause of the New Glenn rocket explosion that occurred during a static-fire test this past May. Chief Executive Dave Limp confirmed that the incident traces back to a liquid oxygen valve located within one of the first stage BE-4 engines. Recovery efforts and subsequent hardware inspections verified this specific component failure as the primary point of origin.

The company has been hard at work conducting component-level and engine hot-fire tests to gain a complete understanding of the failure mode. According to Limp, engineers are currently developing minor modifications for these valves. These adjustments allow for a quick retrofit on existing engines. Manufacturing of this updated hardware is already underway with completion expected by the end of this month.

This finding carries implications beyond Blue Origin. The BE-4 engine also powers the United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur rocket. While ULA has been dealing with its own separate issues regarding solid rocket boosters, it remains unclear how this valve discovery will impact their specific return-to-flight timeline. Blue Origin maintains its focus on rebuilding the damaged Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral.

Despite the significant damage sustained during the May 28 incident, the company holds to an ambitious goal of returning to flight before the end of the year. The investigation into the fault tree continues alongside the site reconstruction.
