LandSpace has successfully recovered the first-stage booster of its Zhuque-3 rocket after a launch from the Gobi Desert. The stainless steel vehicle performed a propulsive landing on legs, marking a technical milestone for China's commercial space sector. This achievement occurs shortly after a separate state-owned operator completed a similar recovery in the South China Sea.
The Zhuque-3, which relies on methane-fueled engines, is intended to support China's growing satellite constellations. Engineers plan to inspect the hardware and prepare the booster for future flights. The company aims to fly each first-stage unit multiple times, aligning with long-term goals for cost reduction in orbital launches.
While China's launch industry currently handles lower flight volumes compared to SpaceX, the transition to reusability suggests a shift in operational capability. Several other private and state-backed firms in the region are working on their own reusable architectures, signaling increased activity in the sector. This development creates a new competitive environment as global launch providers look toward the end of current rocket lifecycles.
