Drone pilot Alexander Forrest recently captured rare footage of a humpback whale giving birth off the coast of New South Wales. While monitoring migrating whales in late July, Forrest noticed an adult female displaying labored behavior near the surf break. Instead of continuing the migration, the whale remained stationary. This unusual movement allowed Forrest to observe the moment of birth as a plume of red appeared in the water followed by the emergence of a newborn calf.
This marks the first time a humpback whale birth has been documented using aerial drone photography. Only three other sightings of this nature exist in scientific records. The footage provides a clear view of the newborn calf surfacing for its first breath and demonstrates the immediate maternal care provided by the mother. Whales face a unique challenge at birth because they must consciously manage their breathing and buoyancy from the moment they leave the birth canal.
Following the initial sighting, Forrest contacted representatives from the Organization for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia. Together, they tracked the mother and calf for several hours to collect behavioral data. These field notes include details on how the calf navigated the water and stayed near its mother during its first day of life. This documentation offers scientists a look at the early maternal instincts and survival strategies required by newborn humpback whales.
The mother and calf were spotted during the peak migration season when thousands of humpback whales travel from Antarctica to warmer Australian waters. Although these whales typically give birth closer to the equator, this specific pair stopped before reaching the tropical breeding grounds. Forrest is currently preparing the drone imagery and field notes for academic review. Researchers intend to publish the findings to advance the scientific understanding of cetacean reproduction and early postnatal development in the wild.
