Jackie the bald eagle in ‘critical’ condition as bird continues to suffer from ‘severe’ anemia; Shadow cries out from nest
Jackie, the beloved bald eagle from Big Bear, remains in critical condition. The Ojai Raptor Center reports she is suffering from severe anemia and kidney inflammation, though experts have ruled out physical trauma from a recent encounter with other eagles.
Wildlife specialists are continuing medical testing to pinpoint the exact cause of her illness. They are investigating potential lead or zinc poisoning, as these environmental toxins can impact raptors in the wild. Despite the severity of her health status, the team reports that she remains alert, is eating with assistance, and has shown signs of strength by standing and perching.
While Jackie receives care, her mate Shadow continues to hold down the nest. Observers have noted him calling out, which many believe is a response to Jackie’s week-long absence. The pair, well-known to followers of the Friends of Big Bear Valley live stream, is currently in the middle of a nesting season with two young eaglets.
Veterinary experts emphasize that wildlife recovery is a slow process. They are monitoring her progress daily and will release more information as test results become available. For now, the focus is on stabilization and ensuring she receives the nutrition needed to maintain her energy levels.
