Wildlife officials share update on Jackie the Big Bear bald eagle’s condition after attack

Wildlife officials have provided an update on the condition of Jackie, the bald eagle well-known to viewers of the Big Bear bald eagle cam. Jackie was rescued on July 18 after sustaining injuries during an encounter with two subadult bald eagles near Dana Point Park on the north shore of Big Bear Lake.

Medical assessments conducted at the Ojai Raptor Center indicate that Jackie is anemic and shows signs of kidney inflammation. Despite these findings, X-rays revealed no broken bones or metallic objects from fishing gear. Experts confirmed she is currently resting and under the care of specialist veterinarians to determine her readiness for a return to her nest in the wild.

Jackie remains separated from her mate, Shadow, who continues to protect their territory and care for their two eaglets, Sandy and Luna. The community has shown significant support during this period, with more than 11,000 contributors donating to the Ojai Raptor Center to help cover the costs of her rehabilitation and ongoing treatment.

Staff at the center describe her as an active, strong patient who is fighting the recovery process in a positive way. She is standing, perching, and eating with assistance. Officials expect to provide additional updates as more test results become available regarding her overall health.
