Wildlife officials give update on Jackie the Big Bear bald eagle’s condition after attack

Wildlife experts provided an update on the condition of Jackie, the bald eagle from Big Bear, following a recent attack. She was grounded near Dana Point Park on July 18 after a fight with two subadult bald eagles.

Veterinarians at the Ojai Raptor Center, where she is recovering, report that she sustained no broken bones or major injuries. Despite this, she remains under medical care while staff monitor her for anemia and kidney inflammation. Officials are performing tests to check for lead, zinc, and rodenticide levels.

Friends of Big Bear Valley, the organization managing the local bald eagle camera, noted that Jackie shows positive signs of energy. She is eating well and moving around her enclosure, showing the spirit that fans of the popular livestream have come to recognize. Staff are currently coordinating with specialists to manage her supportive care and determine when she can return to her nest.

Jackie and her mate, Shadow, have been a fixture on the local eagle cam since 2018. While Jackie recovers in Ventura County, Shadow continues to protect their nest and care for their eaglets, Sandy and Luna. Supporters have contributed thousands of dollars to the Ojai Raptor Center to assist with her rehabilitation efforts.
