Jackie the bald eagle in ‘critical’ condition as bird continues to suffer from ‘severe’ anemia; Shadow cries out from nest
Jackie, the iconic bald eagle from Big Bear, remains in critical condition at the Ojai Raptor Center. Medical professionals are treating her for severe anemia and inflammation affecting her kidneys. She recently survived an attack by another pair of eagles on the north shore of Big Bear Lake.
Wildlife experts are performing tests to find the cause of her health decline. They have not ruled out rodenticide or heavy metal poisoning, although initial X-rays show no ingested fishing gear or metal objects. Experts note that avian medical care requires patience and cannot be rushed.
Despite her situation, caretakers describe Jackie as alert and strong. She is eating on her own and showing the same fighting spirit she is known for in the wild. Staff at the Ojai Raptor Center continue to monitor her condition closely while she undergoes further testing.
Back at the nest, her mate Shadow continues to care for their eaglets alone. Observers watching the live camera feeds have seen Shadow calling out from the nest. Jackie has been away from the site for nearly a week while she receives medical intervention. Friends of Big Bear Valley and the Ojai Raptor Center plan to release updates as soon as more information becomes available regarding her recovery.
