Jackie the bald eagle in critical condition following attack, rescue. Here’s the latest on her recovery

Jackie, the iconic bald eagle from Big Bear, remains in critical condition following a violent attack by two younger bald eagles last week. Wildlife experts at the Ojai Raptor Center are currently treating the bird for severe anemia and kidney inflammation. While initial findings indicated she sustained no major traumatic injuries during the physical altercation, the medical team is working to identify the root cause of her current illness. They are awaiting results from bloodwork to test for lead, zinc, and rodenticides.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the veterinary team is providing supportive care and coordinating with experts globally. Jackie is alert and shows signs of improvement. Staff report she has sufficient energy to act aggressive toward handlers, which they view as a positive indicator of her spirit. She is currently eating with assistance and has begun perching on her own.

The incident began on July 17 at Big Bear Lake when onlookers noticed Jackie on the ground. She appeared to fend off her attackers using her talons but lacked the strength to fly to safety. Local fire crews secured the site until the San Dimas Raptor Rescue team arrived to transport her to the Ojai Raptor Center. During this time, her mate, Shadow, has continued to protect their nest and their two offspring, Sandy and Luna, while calling out for her.

Wildlife officials note that territorial disputes are a standard aspect of raptor behavior, though they are difficult for the public to witness. These conflicts are part of the process for establishing and defending breeding territories. The outpouring of support for Jackie has been significant, with thousands of donors contributing to her medical care and the ongoing operations of the raptor rescue organizations involved.
