Big Bear bald eagle Jackie moved from ICU to regular hospital care unit in encouraging recovery milestone

Jackie, the celebrated bald eagle from Big Bear, has reached a significant milestone in her recovery. Veterinary staff at the Ojai Raptor Center announced that she is no longer in the intensive care unit. After requiring oxygen therapy to stabilize her condition, she has transitioned to a regular hospital care unit. While this move indicates progress, medical professionals stress that she remains a patient requiring close monitoring and continued treatment for her health issues.

Regulatory requirements from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service dictate how the facility communicates about the animal. While the public knows her as Jackie, the center officially refers to her as patient 26-519. This naming protocol aligns with state and federal standards for rehabilitating wildlife, ensuring that public updates focus on medical status rather than personal attributes.

Jackie arrived at the center suffering from severe anemia and kidney inflammation. She received a life-saving blood transfusion from a donor eagle named Spirit to combat these conditions. Although she is eating on her own and showing increased energy, veterinarians are still working to identify the specific cause of her illness. The medical team notes that she has become more alert and assertive during her daily care routines.

Back in Big Bear, her partner Shadow remains in the vicinity. The couple's two eaglets, Sandy and Luna, have fledged the nest and are no longer appearing on the live feed. Experts describe this period as a summer vacation for Shadow, who has been spotted in the habitat daily. Conservationists observe that despite the arrival of subadult eagles near the nest, Shadow shows no sign of abandoning his territory. Plans remain in place to return Jackie to her home environment near the nest once her recovery is complete and she is cleared for release.
