Fifteen elephants recently died in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, leading to a tense investigation over the cause of death. The Kenya Wildlife Service detected cyanide in the animals after finding tomatoes in their stomachs. This finding has prompted officials to examine whether local agricultural practices are responsible, as the elephants often raid nearby farms for produce.
Local farmers in the Kimana area express skepticism regarding these reports. Many have worked this land for decades and state they do not use cyanide or similar toxic chemicals. They argue that their standard pesticides are government-regulated and that other livestock, such as goats and cattle, graze in the same areas without experiencing similar health issues. Some farmers point out that elephants regularly damage their crops, yet they have maintained a history of coexistence with the wildlife.
The incident highlights the growing tension between humans and wildlife in regions where farming activity expands into natural habitats. According to the National Elephant Plan, conflict over property and crops remains a significant threat to the elephant population, which Kenya has worked to grow to more than 36,000 individuals. While authorities continue to test samples from the deceased animals, they have ruled out traditional retaliatory killing as the cause of this specific event.
