An 18-year-old man from San Diego has pleaded guilty to a federal charge after a viral video showed him kicking a sea lion at La Jolla Cove. Tyler Muehl admitted to violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act during the incident, which occurred late on July 22.
The plea agreement details that Muehl approached the animal while mimicking boxing motions, even referring to himself as a professional UFC fighter. He kicked the sea lion four times, causing it to flinch and recoil. When the animal attempted to escape, Muehl continued the pursuit, kicking at it two more times until the sea lion managed to get over a seawall and reach the beach.
Authorities confirmed that sea lions are protected under federal law. This offense carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a fine of up to $100,000. U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon stated clearly that federal crimes result in federal consequences. The incident has drawn attention to the limited enforcement resources available at the cove, where volunteers often act as the primary eyes and ears for local authorities.
This case marks another instance of human interference with protected wildlife. Earlier this year, a different individual faced arrest for throwing a large rock at an endangered Hawaiian monk seal. Officials continue to remind the public that intentional harassment of marine mammals remains illegal and dangerous for the animals.
