What’s horned, fluffy, and ethically dubious? Yak clones
Scientists in Tibet are currently scaling up a project to create herds of cloned yaks. These animals roam high-altitude plains where environmental pressures and inbreeding have historically reduced population health and fertility. The research team aims to produce more than 100 of these elite clones by 2028, selecting for specific traits like increased size, faster growth, and improved disease resistance to support the local agricultural economy.
The project uses somatic cell nuclear transfer to produce these animals. While the primary focus rests on domestic yaks that provide wool, milk, and labor for nomadic farmers, researchers also have plans to use this technology for the conservation of rare wild subspecies like the golden wild yak. Supporters argue that traditional conservation methods struggle to keep pace with rapid habitat degradation and climate-related threats. They maintain that synthetic biology provides a necessary tool to help species adapt to harsher conditions in one of the world's most challenging terrains.
However, the project faces scrutiny from bioethicists and international observers. Questions remain regarding the transparency of the process, the number of failed attempts involved in the cloning experiments, and the long-term impact on genetic diversity. Critics emphasize that while cloning might offer a technical fix for specific population metrics, it does not address the underlying causes of habitat loss or ecological decline. As the research team works toward mass-scale application, the conversation centers on whether these interventions create more stability for the region or introduce new risks to an already fragile ecosystem.
