A young cinnamon black bear caused a stir in Casper this past Friday. The yearling bear entered a residential garage located on the east side of the city, prompting a call to local authorities.
Janet Milek from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department confirmed the incident on Saturday. The bear, which appeared to have been recently weaned by its mother, was found hiding in the structure. Wildlife officials believe the animal was searching for its own territory, a common occurrence for young bears reaching independence.
While finding a wild animal in a garage is rare for residents, it is a known behavior for young bears that have been pushed out of their family units. These bears often wander into urban environments by accident while navigating new surroundings.
Game and Fish staff arrived on the scene and successfully immobilized the bear to ensure public safety. The animal was then relocated away from the residential area. Department officials note that while such reports are uncommon, they handle these instances on a regular basis each year as part of their standard wildlife management duties.
