Michael Kim shoots 59 at 3M Open, 15th in PGA Tour history
Michael Kim joined an elite club in professional golf on Friday. During the second round of the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, he carded a 59, marking only the 15th time in the history of the PGA Tour that a player has broken 60.
Kim secured the milestone with a 24-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at TPC Twin Cities. This performance was notable not just for the score, but for how he closed the round. He recorded birdies on each of his final four holes, ending the day at 14 under par overall. This surge gave him a three-shot lead heading into the weekend.
This round represents his personal best by a significant margin. His previous low score on the tour was a 62. Kim noted that the conditions, while breezy, were manageable enough to allow for aggressive play, though he admitted the closing holes remained difficult due to water hazards guarding the green.
His recent performance is a sharp turnaround. After missing the cut in his three previous tournaments, including the British and Scottish Opens, Kim decided to take time off to reset his energy. That choice proved effective as he transitioned from a tie for 17th earlier this season to the top of the leaderboard at the 3M Open.
Other competitors remain in contention as the tournament moves into the final two rounds. Ben Kohles, Chandler Phillips, and Emiliano Grillo are currently in a tie for second place, three strokes behind Kim. World number one Scottie Scheffler sits seven shots back after a round of 70.
